This is a guide to the various classes we offer and what you can expect from them;
Basics
The aim of the basics class is to provide everyone with the fundamental techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and how to apply them in gi and no-gi (also referred to as submission wrestling). The classes are suitable for all levels and are recommended for beginners.
Advanced
In the advanced classes you will learn more complex techniques which require a good knowledge of jiu-jitsu and also an ability to use it. This class is aimed at students who have strong fundamentals and are able to perform more complex movements.
The advanced class will be taught with both gi and no-gi techniques. Gi techniques will require a good use of different gi grips and the no-gi techniques will require a good understanding of underhooks, overhooks and clinch.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
These classes will start with a warm-up then some general conditioning work and some based on the movements used during a grappling match. Technique will then be taught which could either be working through a sequence of positions to achieve a submission, looking at an attack and the counter, defences to submissions or escapes from inferior positions. Every class will include sparring.
You will be expected to wear a gi for these classes as many of the techniques taught will require it. If you are new to the club a gi top and belt can be provided.
Submission Grappling
These will be structured as per the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes but the techniques will focus on using grips without the gi. You will learn to use underhooks, overhooks and body locks to control your opponent. Again, every class will include live sparring.
Suitable attire; grappling shorts, board shorts (without exterior buttons/zips etc), rashguard, t-shirt, gi trousers.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
There is a much larger focus on conditioning in these classes. Grappling techniques will be taught with consideration to strikes and we will also cover aspects of MMA such as returning to a standing position, standing clinch work and ground and pound. Sparring will be varied in order to let people focus on the areas they wish to train; grappling, grappling with strikes, takedowns, stand-up, amateur or pro MMA. However, no one is expected to spar at a level they do not feel comfortable with.
Suitable attire is as per the Submission Grappling class. You will also need a pair of MMA gloves and possibly shin-guards, headgear etc depending on what sparring you wish to do.
MMA & competition conditioning
This class is aimed at those who fight in MMA or grappling competitions. It is also ideal for anyone who simply wants to take their physical fitness to another level.
The classes will involve hard cardio and conditioning work such as; intense circuit training, high intensity interval training, tabata intervals, tire flips and resistance exercises. There will also be fight/competition specific drilling and sparring.
This class is a very hard work out and anyone who attends will be expected to push themselves hard and also support others through the training.
Suitable attire depends on exactly what training you will be doing but the MMA class is a good guideline.
Private lessons
In private lessons with Chris you will be able to cover any aspect of training you wish, from simple BJJ technique to additional MMA conditioning work. Please speak to Chris if you would like to schedule a lesson.
Open Mat Sessions
These sessions are for club members (anyone who trains in the regular classes) to train as they wish. You can use this time to spar, drill or do additional conditioning work etc. Chris or Rob will be overseeing each session.
